On March 14, the Westerville South Honors Society inducted 53 new members for the upcoming 2022-23 school year. The National Honors Society’s purpose is to create an enthusiasm for scholarships, stimulate a desire to render service, promote worthy leadership, and encourage the development of character in students of Westerville South High School.

The ceremony was held in the auditorium after school, with guest speaker Principal Mike Hinze accepting the inductees as full members of the society. Before the induction ceremony, all current National honor society officers lit a ceremonial candle symbolizing tradition and unity.

During the ceremony, current members of the NHS spoke about each inducted member’s service and leadership activities. Every newly accepted member had to pledge, “I pledge myself, to uphold the high purposes of this society, to which I have been selected. Striving in every way, by word and deed, to make its ideals, the ideals of my life.”

In order to be eligible for the National Honor Society, you must be in the senior or junior class and must have been in attendance for a period of one semester at Westerville South. Eligible candidates must also have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.6 and upon meeting the requirements the service, leadership, and character of an individual are considered as well.

A newly inducted Junior, Marta Arn stated, “Being inducted in the National Honors Society has given me the opportunity to be recognized for my leadership and service work, I am excited to be a part of a community that holds the same ideals”.

If this society is something you would like to be a part of, it’s not too late even as a senior. Newly inducted senior Lillian Malone said, “I almost applied last year, but I had so much going on with full IB that I was worried I would get too overwhelmed. I still really wanted to be a part of such a cool program though, so I told myself I would apply for senior year instead”.

National Honors Society represents those that make Westerville South High School a place of service and dedication. Congratulations to all of the newly inducted members, so many opportunities lie ahead.
