Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011)

Gil Scott-Heron was born on April 1, 1949 and was best known as a poet, novelist, musician, and songwriter. By the age of 13, Heron had his first collection of poems. In 1968, Heron released his first novel; and in 1970, he released his first music album. Heron’s impact in the music industry brought light to African-American genres, such as hip-hop and neo-soul. Known for his spoken word performances, Heron found himself in the position as one of the political figures during the Black Arts Movement. Heron, known as the “godfather of rap,” left a legacy that influenced modern hip-hop artists such as Tupac and Jay Z and still has influence with his poem, “ The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” during the Black Lives Matter movement.
