The Athlete of the Week for Oct. 24 is junior volleyball player Sasha Brownlee for the second time this year.
She has continued to dominate throughout the season. Finishing the season with 32 aces, 43 assists, and 272 digs. She has been a big impact on the team, helping lead them to a 13-10 record and taking them to the district finals on Oct. 23.
Brownlee has been a vital player on defense for the Wildcats, leading the team in digs. Those defensive skills showed out against Delaware Hayes. Where she had 19 digs and helped beat Hayes 3-0, and believes she had a pretty good game. “For Delaware Hayes my defense was good and my serve receive was consistent,” Brownlee stated.
The Lady ‘Cats took on Westerville Central on Oct. 6, making history. For the first time in Westerville history they played a game in the stadium. The environment of the game was unlike any other, with hundreds of fans in attendance and an electric student section.
This game meant a lot not only to the team but to the community, as it shined a spotlight on a sport that often doesn’t get the credit it deserves. Brownlee thought the same thing saying, “The atmosphere of the game was amazing and made everyone play harder.”
The Wildcats won the game 3-1 to rule the ‘ville, which means so much to the team since they haven’t done so since 2022. Brownlee stated, “It feels really good to rule the ‘ville; it’s our first time in three years so it gave us the confidence boost that we needed as a team.”
The team has also started off the playoffs very strong, reaching the district final, for the first time in 20 years, which will be played on Oct. 23 against Logan high school.
It means a lot to the team being in this position, but they’ve also worked extremely hard for it. “It feels really good for us to be going into the district finals. We are super proud of ourselves and ready for the game,” Brownlee stated.
Congratulations to Brownlee and the Lady Wildcats on having such a great season and good luck with the rest of the season.
