The Westerville South Girls Basketball team knows how to react quickly as the game rapidly changes. This shows with their great, riveting season and a record of 20-3. With a win over New Albany, 59-21, the ‘Cats are going farther into the playoffs against Dublin Coffman on Feb. 26.

The Wildcats played Bishop Watterson on Feb. 5 and won 59-57 with a buzzer beater from junior Leila Jones.

Ava Robey, a senior, said this was one of the most exciting games. The ‘Cats are 26th in Ohio and Watterson is 33rd, so going into this game, both teams knew that it was going to be a good opponent, and the ‘Cats came out with the win.

The team also beat Westerville North 51-35. Nelia Guice, a junior said, “There’s so much emotion and exhilaration because they are our rivals and usually the student section comes out so they make the gym just electric with energy!”

The team started tournament play on Feb. 15 with a win against Olentangy Berlin, with a final score of 54-21. Robey said she feels very confident going into tournaments as long as the team is playing at full potential.

With their two wins in tournament play, it shows they are playing well. Guice said, “The team has really good girls that can play at high levels and the team as a whole has more talent than in previous years.”

The team is very athletic and competitive and it has shown this season.

They ended their regular season on a high note when playing against Franklin Heights on Feb.11 with a huge win of 76-17.

Robey said her biggest motivation when playing is her teammates. She knows that many of her teammates are going on to play in college so she wants them to “succeed and have the best chance they can have for a successful basketball career.”

Guice said her biggest motivation is definitely her family. “They have always been by my side and pushed me to be the best version of myself. They are who I play for and what keeps me going through good and bad days,” Guice said.

The Lady ‘Cats are not done yet and keep pushing to “be a force in the tournament”, Robey said.
