South Student Athletes Score at State Tournaments.
March 23, 2023
Three of Westerville South’s very own student-athletes have achieved great things. Marissa Saunders, Alexus Roberts, and Gwen Stacey all qualified for the State Championships in their respective sports.
Stacey, a talented swimmer, has been making waves in the pool all season long. She earned a spot as a state qualifier at C T Branin Natatorium in Canton. She did not anticipate swimming at the state meet and said, “This was the first year that I made it, so I wasn’t really expecting to go.”
Although not expecting to make it to states, Stacey has consistently set personal best times and has dominated her competition. Her hard work and dedication have paid off. While competing at the state meet, Stacey pointed out that she was “nervous, but it didn’t matter too much how I did because I had already made it to states and accomplished my goal.”
Track and field athletes Roberts and Saunders have been sprinting their way to success all indoor season long. Roberts competed in the 60 meter hurdles, 60 meter dash, and long jump at the State Championships. Roberts placed 4th overall for the 60m hurdles. Saunders also competed in the 60 meter hurdle and 60m dash earning 2nd place in the 60m hurdles overall at states. They’ve broken several school records, Marissa 60m hurdles record followed by Alexus with the 60m dash. Their speed and determination are truly impressive.
These three athletes have put in countless hours of hard work, dedication, and training to get to the state meets. Their performances this season have been noteworthy, and they are a fine representation of WSHS athletes, as well as the old adage, “hard work pays off”.
