Westley the Wildcat is a junior at Westerville South, and he is very grateful to be the new mascot. He is enjoying all the support he has received from fans, athletes, and students.
Q: What led you to being the mascot?
A: “Last year many Principal Michael Hinze, other teachers and staff members suggested me for the role. That made me really interested in trying out for the mascot role; but unfortunately, I was the only one that tried out. So they gave me the position for this year.”
Q: Do you play any sports, a part of any clubs, or any other extracurricular activities?
A: “I play lacrosse. I’m a member of BSU, the BHM show, and I’m a part of the cheer team. I’m going to try to get a varsity letter for the cheer team for being a mascot.”
Q: What do you enjoy the most about being a mascot?
A: “Obviously it’s a lot of fun hyping up the crowd and running around, but I really enjoy taking pictures with the kids and students.”
Q: Does Westley have a favorite snack?
A: “YES! Pickles, I love eating pickles during the game. I need to make sure I’m hydrated and eat salt to make sure I don’t lose water weight because the suit gets really hot.”
Q: What do you do to prepare for pep rallies and games?
A: “Pep rallies are a lot different than games. The main difference is a lot of the attention is on me during the pep rallies so I have to make sure I communicate with the cheer team and know what is going on. While at games, I can just be myself and I have a lot of fun dancing and taking pictures with fans. One thing I tell myself before games and pep rallies is not everyone is going to like me as a person, but everyone will like Westley the Wildcat.”
Q: Will you be the mascot next year?
A: “Right now I am pretty sure I want to be the mascot next year. It’s still early though, and I could see myself wanting to do something else. I hope to see other people try out to be the mascot next year.”
Q: What advice would you give to any underclassmen who would like to be Visit Sitea mascot?
A: “Just be yourself because that’s really what got me here. Don’t care about what other people say or think about you. Also, make sure to have fun and be grateful for the opportunity that you’re given.”
Q: How do you feel about being the first mascot here in about 20 years and hopefully being the first of many “Westley the Wildcat” mascots?
A: “I’m really grateful to be a part of this history but, I don’t really feel any pressure or anything like that because I’m just being myself and I really enjoy what I’m doing.”
Q: Is there anything else you would like to say?
A: “I’ve said it a lot in this interview but just be yourself and you’ll have a lot of fun in high school. Make sure to follow @westletythewildcat on instagram and look out for a Westley the Wildcat TikTok account that I’m going to start posting on soon.”
