Black Student Union (BSU) hosted their first event of the school year, Trivia Night, on Oct. 29. Trivia Night was a fun and successful event with games, food, team spirit, and laughter according to participants.
“If I remember correctly, I came up with the Trivia Night idea, but it was a combined group effort to make it the way it was. I thank all my co-leaders for putting it together and making it the fun trivia night it was,” Imani Akita, president of BSU said.
“It was pretty good; we had a number of teams and answered a bunch of questions. It was really fun. I enjoyed it,” junior Amanuel Hailegorgis said.
The student leaders of BSU host meetings on the first Tuesday of each month and strive to have an event every month, held in math teacher Kevin Freeman’s room.
“We’re so thankful to have Mr. Freeman as our teacher/head leader. He lets us use his room and provides snacks for our meetings so we’re really thankful,” Akita said.
Black Student Union is a club at Westerville South High School that provides a space to unite people together. Gloria Simei, vice president of BSU said, “It brings us together as a community and helps us to have a place to express ourselves in an area where we can be ourselves.”
“Having a club like BSU in a school that’s so diverse, it definitely creates a safe space for African Americans, Africans, and black students to come and be themselves without fear or judgement and just to have fun in unity,” Akita said.
Although BSU did not host an event in November, the leaders are planning to host one in December. There’s a remind; bsu2k25!, and an Instagram page; westervillesouthbsu, for information about upcoming events.
Students interested in becoming a leader in BSU next year have the opportunity to show up to these events and meetings and prove themselves to the current leaders.
“Honestly if you’re just somebody that likes to be involved, who has a knack for leadership, just come out to the meetings and if the current leaders see the potential in you, they will bring you in as a leader,” Akita said.
