“The air is the only place free from prejudices.” Bessie Colman
Bessie Colman is recognized as the first African-American woman to hold a pilot’s license. Colman was faced with many racial challenges along her way but with her determination to pursue her licences she moved to France in 1921. Colman earned her license at the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in France.
She would later move back to the U.S to become a performer at air shows. Colman was an advocate for African-Americans and also women in careers of aviation. Coleman would sadly pass away at a young age of 34 in a plane crash, leaving a path for future generations with her achievements and success.
