The Athlete of the Week for 9/8-14 is Senior Football player London Vickroy.
Vickroy has played a key role on the Wildcat Varsity football team not only as a leader but as a part of the defense, with 28 total tackles and eight TFL’s.
Vickroy had a great game last week with nine tackles and one TFL. But, he has greater expectations for himself. He said, “I feel like I did well but I could have still done more. I missed opportunities to make plays on the QB, so I’m going to work to improve on that continuously.”
Vickroy holds himself to a very high standard, even if he has an amazing game he always knows there’s more he can work on and do better.
South’s defense has been the heart and soul of the team for the past few years. Last year, the team held opponents to 20 points per game.
Through four games this year they’ve only allowed 41 points and even held two opponents scoreless. Vickroy contributed to these feats.
“I’m honored to be part of such a stout defense; it’s been the heart and soul of our team for about four years now. Being able to be part of a unit that’s been solid to the point we have, gives me more confidence in myself and the team as a whole,”he said.
He also noted how the guys in the defensive room are always able to rely on each other, stating, “I know I can make a mistake and the guys out there can have my back and lift me up.”
Friday Sept. 18 South takes on Big Walnut, in arguably the toughest and best game of the year. Last year, Westerville South lost to Big Walnut in a 31-28 nail biter. This year the team hopes to change that outcome.
Vickroy said, “Right now we’re coming into this game with a must win mindset. I believe Big Walnut is the best team on our schedule so now more than ever we have to have a good week of practice.”
The team has been working hard for this game to be able to have the game turn out differently this year.
Last week the Wildcats took down Dublin Scioto in an absolute thriller. The final score was 26-18, but the score wasn’t looking too hopeful at halftime. Halftime ended with a score of 18-3 with the Wildcats down.
Many wondered what happened and what was said in the locker room, Vickroy said, “At halftime we got straight to the point. Several seniors stepped up and spoke about the issues we were having in that first half. We knew we were better than the team we were facing and something had to give. I think the overall vibe in the locker room was very positive the whole halftime period, and everyone was confident we’d win that game. Sure enough we went back out and executed at a level we knew we were capable of.”
After this the Wildcats came out and scored 23 unanswered points, with a 1 and 15 yard rushing touchdown from RB Jhalil Armstrong and a 1 yard rushing touchdown from QB Evan Andrews.
Thank you to everyone who voted for Athlete of the Week and congrats to Vickroy, good luck with the rest of your season and school year.
