Sophomore Reid Smith was born with Fibular Hemimelia in his right leg, which resulted in him having an amputated leg.  However, it doesn’t stop him from doing anything and being the best student he can be.

Fibular Heminelia is a congenital longitudinal limb deficiency characterized by complete or partial absence of the fibula bone.

Smith said he is not treated differently by his peers.  He believes nothing is too challenging; he just has to work harder to get things right.

 He participates in the Symphonic Choir and Theatre here at Westerville South. He has participated in choir for three years and theater since the 6th grade. He really likes theatre because he enjoys dancing, acting and people. He  also enjoys choir because of the singing, music and harmonies. He said his favorite music to perform is jazz.

Smith has performed in two South theatre productions,  “Oklahoma” and “Bright Star”. His favorite memory from “Bright Star” was the fun atmosphere at rehearsals.  He said, “Everybody would just laugh at everything.”

He did not participate in Cross Country this year, but he did run two years in middle school. 

Smith describes himself as outgoing. He lives with his Mom and Dad, and he has two brothers.  He is the middle son.  They have a family dog named Finn. 

His favorite subject is English because “it doesn’t have one answer like other classes; there’s many perspectives.” His favorite book is “Ender Game” by Orson Scott Card. 

Smith enjoys  “watching movies or TV shows or hang out with friends” to relax and have fun.

He wants to be remembered as someone who did not let his disability be the reason he could not do something. He plans on going to college in the future, but no definite plans for afterward.
