Shedding Light on Claudette Colvin

Claudette Colvin, born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama was arrested at 15 years old when she refused to give her seat to a white woman on a segregated bus. On March 2, 1955 Colvin had become the first person to be arrested for refusing to give up their seat to a white person. However, because of Colvin’s darker complexion, “bad hair”, and age, she did not receive the same attention as Rosa Parks, who was significantly lighter, older, and had loose curls.
