On Nov. 30, Westerville South IB students provided a learning opportunity for the community, students, staff, and families to learn about STEM through hands-on activities.

STEM night is required for IB science students and is “a way to support the community and an opportunity to display how outstanding South students are, as well as a chance to show how the new Science wing looks after some renovations,” according to IB Science teacher Jeff Owdom.

“IB students had roughly a week to prepare their STEM night presentations because they required two activities for two age groups, some for really young kids and some for older kids,” Owdom said. 

To ensure that the kids did not leave without learning something, activities were included so that  “students can work with their hands to learn something that will pique their interest in science,” Owdom explained.

 The stations were divided into four categories: physics, biology, chemistry, and sports/exercise. 

The night was organized by students, “but an admin group came up with plans, and teachers were the facilitators while the students were the driving force behind it all,” Owdom said.

  Braylen Fenty said, “We spent about a week and a half working on it. I set up my station in about 10 minutes, discussing how pushups and squats cause muscles to contract.” 

This experience helped students, staff and family learn more about STEM.
