The 2025 season for award shows finally arrived with the Grammys on Feb. 2. Many more award shows will be happening throughout the next few months, and Westerville South students have given their opinions on whether or not they are worth the craze anymore.
According to a Scribe survey, 56.8% of students at Westerville South do not watch award shows, but 43.2% do watch award shows.
When it comes to award shows, there are only a select few that are quite popular with younger age groups. This includes the Grammys, the Golden Globes, the Oscars, and the People’s Choice Awards.
Of the students surveyed, 38.6% viewed the Grammys, which had the highest number of votes compared to the other award shows. Next up is the Oscars, with 27.3% of South students tuning in to watch.
There are certain aspects of award shows that draw viewers in, such as the fashion, category awards, comedic host, and the celebrity drama. According to the Scribe survey, 50% of students who watch award shows stated they tune in for the red carpet looks.
However, some, like senior Ella Criger, view these shows for the artist performances.
“I really liked that the Grammys gave all of the new artist nominees the chance to perform,” she stated.
A lot of the fashion voters also voted for the category awards. One of the categories for the Golden Globes was ‘Best Musical,’ and there’s been a lot of controversy on social media due to Emilia Perez winning over Wicked.
34% of South students surveyed believed that Wicked deserved the win; whereas, only 14% of the students believed that Emilia Perez deserved the win.
Considering the fact that a majority of the students had no opinion on it since they had not seen those movies and they do not watch award shows, there is a question of whether or not anybody cares about award shows anymore.
Many students that took the survey stated that they do not watch award shows because they don’t care about celebrities, yet many students reported viewing these shows only because of a certain celebrity they’re rooting to win.
Beyonce won Album of the Year for her 2024 album Cowboy Carter. This has also stirred the pot on social media.
“I was upset that Billie Eilish didn’t win the award for Album of the Year at the Grammys,” Criger added. “I feel that hers was the most influential out of all of the other albums in that category.”
While some students care about the results of the winnings, the aforementioned Scribe survey shows the opinions across all four grades. “I don’t really have an interest in award shows,” senior Isla Riddle said.
The popularity of award shows varies throughout Westerville South, but they seem to be losing value. 40% of students who answered the survey agreed that nobody really cares about them anymore.
According to Statista, “In 2025, 15.4 million Americans watched the Grammy Awards ceremony. This figure marked a decrease from the previous year, and represented the fourth-lowest TV audience since the 2000 ceremony” (Stoll).
Award shows may need to incorporate a new “wow” factor that will draw viewers in to watch.
