Cryptic McCulloch, a senior at Westerville south, shares their painting “Coffee” prompted by Elizabeth Langston’s Advanced Painting 2 class. McCulloch chose this reference because they were interested in painting the utensils, “I really like any metal or glass, they’re always really fun to paint.”
McCulloch said the most challenging part of this piece was the beans. “It was very repetitive, and I had to do lots of layers to distinguish them from turning into blobs.”
Langston said she is proud of Cryptic for the work they put into this acrylic painting. “I think it showcases an excellent use of value and an intriguing composition,” she said.
The motion and liveliness of this painting is admirable. Through the coffee pouring, ripples of the glass, and beans filling the background, McCulloch really brought this painting to life.
As an artist, McCulloch’s favorite medium is oil paint; however, this painting was created with acrylic. McCulloch has been making art for as long as they can remember, even recalling going to art camps in kindergarten.
While painting is their favorite form of artistic expression, they also participate in ceramics and scrapbooking.
