Each Friday before school from 6:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m in Room 2111, you can expect to be greeted with a warm welcome by Westerville South’s Fellowship Christian Athletes (FCA).
It is becoming more than just a weekly bible study. For the students at South, it’s a safe place where young adults can further grow their own faith and build community.
Following up after an FCA meeting, South senior Emily Whitehead said, “FCA feels like a second family almost to me; and despite the type of week I had, I know I always have a safe place I can go to and feel supported.”
FCA members gather to do things like sharing scriptures, praying together and speak openly about the challenges they face both with academics and athletics. They also might talk about their journey in faith.
Although “athletes” is a part of the name, it’s emphasized by all members that you don’t have to be an athlete to join them. Everyone is welcome, including those who are not Christian or religious, according to South junior Caden Slocum.
Sophomore wrestler Ishmael Bangura said, “Personally, I don’t have the closest relationship with Christ and am not the most religious person ever; however FCA is a very nice place where I can be open and vulnerable with my problems.”
“FCA gives students a place to be honest, and not just about sports but also things like the people they want to become,” Slocum explained.
Being open and honest at times can be the hardest part to start the process of overcoming adversity that life may throw your way. FCA gives students who may be feeling lost and without hope a place where they can go to be their imperfect selves.
“It can be very powerful to see athletes encouraging others in more ways than just pushing each other to be better in their respective sports,” Senior student athlete Addie Quisumbing said.
Junior Grant Buzard stated, “It’s a huge reminder to me that I am never alone and that even some of the people I’ve only seen as athletes are so much more than just that. I’m so glad it’s helped give me more perspective on life and the way I view others as a whole.”
As the school year goes on, the leaders hope to grow the group’s attendance and encourage more students to get involved. The student leaders are Whitehead, Slocum, and junior Grace Battles.
The club advisors are history teacher Jimmy Gaul and Dr. Laurie Marburger.
Whether you’re a varsity athlete or not, FCA wants you there.
