Born in Los Angeles, California, Tyler the Creator rose to fame after being a part of the music group Odd Future. Tyler, the Creator, first started rapping in the late 2000s. Working jobs here and there at places like FedEx and Starbucks before he decided to make music his full-time career.
In 2007, he co-founded the hip-hop collective Odd Future. He was 16 years-old at the time; and the following year, the group released its first mixtape, the “Odd Future Tape Vol. 1”.
Over time Odd Future dissolved gradually due to individual careers and different artistic visions, according to Teachrock.org. After splitting, Tyler continued to pursue music releasing several award winning albums including “Wolf”, “Flower Boy”, “Igor”, and his most recent albums released in 2025 “Chromakopia”, and “DONT TAP THE GLASS”.
He often speaks on topics like mental health, racism, and his struggles while growing up in his music, with lyrics like “Tell these black kids they can be who they are” and “Sometimes you just want to restart”. Many of his fans are able to connect and relate to his lyrics and work.
“I’ve been listening to Tyler since middle school. He’s always been really popular, but I personally loved his music because I could connect to it in a way; he is just really vulnerable in his songs, and I think that’s cool,” Junior Zak Ting said
His nonconventional music style and lyrics are what draw people in as he continues to release music. Having won six Grammys, and having been the only rapper to chart a number one album four consecutive years in a row, it’s what makes him one of the most popular musicians of the the 21st century.
I chose Tyler the Creator because of the influence he has had on my life. Growing up my dad would always listen to his music, whether it be in the car or in the house, Tyler’s music would always be on.
I grew to love his music composition, and his music overall. Last year, I went to my first concert, Tyler the Creators “Chromakopia” tour, and it really helped me form a new perspective on music overall.
