Students who are 18 years old and registered to vote to have the opportunity to participate in the upcoming general election on Nov 2.

Polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. that Tuesday, according to ohiosos.gov.

“I registered to vote because it’s my civic duty, and it’s the most important thing in the world, especially now in a time of political controversy,” senior and registered voter Abigail Cumming-Vukovic said.

In the election, there are currently three candidates running for three seats open on the Westerville City Schools Board of Education. This means that the current race is now uncontested. Each of the candidates are running as nonpartisan according to ballotpedia.org.

There are currently seven candidates running for the four open seats on the Westerville City Council. The top four candidates who receive the most votes will each earn a seat on the council for a four-year term.

“The average age of a Senator is 64. The average age of a Westerville City Councilmember is 60. This is despite the fact that the average age of Americans is 38. Young voices are simply not represented as they should be. That’s why it is absolutely critical that young people vote, that they encourage their friends to vote, and that they themselves run for office as soon as they are able,” Westerville City Councilwoman Valerie Cumming said.

The deadline to register for voting in the upcoming election was on Oct. 4. Those who missed that deadline have to wait until the next general election.

“I missed the due date… it makes me feel sad because now my voice won’t be heard,” senior Maggie Price said.

There just wasn’t very much information about the election or the deadline for registration, Price  also said.

This election will most likely be the first that seniors who have turned 18 this year will get to vote in.
