Race for Awareness: WEC Brings Mental Health to Light

South’s social worker and Hope Squad advisor, Noelle Spriestersbach, kneels to take photos of Twinkle, the school’s facility dog. In the back, Annamarie Carlson, youth services manager at Westerville Public Library runs a booth where people could receive free books, bookmarks, pens, and fidgets, which also featured fun bubbles.

Westerville Education Challenge (WEC) hosted a 5K and family fun run on Saturday, Aug. 26, to raise awareness about mental health, commemorate lives lost to suicide, and gain funds to provide resources for those in crisis. The event was held at McCann Stadium from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Westerville South’s Hope squad volunteered at the event, which was well attended. Hope Squad is sponsored by the WEC and is a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program.
