The Athlete of the Week for Nov. 7 is sophomore cross country runner Katelyn Hogenbirk.
Hogenbirk has been a standout for the Wildcats, consistently finishing as one of the team’s top runners throughout the season. Her dedication and drive have helped push the girls’ cross country team to one of its strongest years in recent memory.
Hogenbirk recently made history by qualifying for the state championship meet, a goal she has been chasing since middle school. “It means the world to me,” Hogenbirk said. “Ever since I was in middle school, I would look at the school record and dream about breaking it.”
Her hard work has certainly paid off, as she and teammate sophomore Lily Zappin both earned spots at the state meet. “I’m very proud of making it to states. Lily and I worked very hard, and I’m excited to represent South with grit and determination,” she said.
Reflecting on her growth this year, Hogenbirk said, “I feel pretty strong about my performance this season, and I’m ready to drop more time next season.”
As she looks ahead, Hogenbirk has no plans of slowing down. She’s already focused on the upcoming track season, where she plans to compete in the 3200-meter run. “I’m planning on running the 3200 for track and having a strong track season,” she said.
Looking beyond high school, Hogenbirk has big goals for her running career. “I plan to run in college — my dream is to make it to the University of Oregon and go D1,” she said.
Congratulations to Katelyn Hogenbirk, and good luck as you continue to make history for the Wildcats on the track and in the classroom.
